Birrell, Augustine
Collected Essays: Volume I & Volume II (set)
Elliot Stock, London, 1899. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. title pages in red & black; contents list at front of each volume; the collected essays by this Honorary Fellow of Trinty Hall, Cambridge mainly on literature, poetry, & their authors but also on men, women, books & some on other subjects such as nationality, politicians & book buying. Birrell was elected to parliament for West Fife at a by-election in 1889, as a Liberal MP & held his seat for some ten years. He was defeated in 1900 but returned for Bristol North at the general election of 1906 & introduced the Education Bill of that year which, later, was dropped making it impossible for Birrell to continue in his post, and in January 1907 he was appointed Chief Secretary for Ireland. While serving in government, Birrell supported a number of progressive measures and proposals such as expanded housing provision, land reform, and meals for schoolchildren. However, his failure to take action against the rebels in the weeks and months before the Easter Rising in Ireland led to his resignation in 1916. Birrell wrote, and spoke, with a characteristic humour which became known as birrelling. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 326 & 343 pages. 2-volume set (complete). Mack, Maynard & Ian Gregor (editors), Imagined Worlds: Essays on some English Novels and Novelists in Honour of John Butt.
Mack, Maynard & Ian Gregor (editors)
Imagined Worlds: Essays on some English Novels and Novelists in Honour of John Butt.
Methuen, London, 1968. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Near Fine Condition/Near Fine. This collection of essays was originally planned as a sixtieth-birthday tribute to John Butt, formerly Regius Professor of Rhetoric and English Literature in the University of Edinburgh. The English novel was chosen as the subject in recognition of Professor Butt's long labour towards a new edition of the works of Charles Dickens. Professor Butt knew of the projected tribute, sealed with his approval its list of contributors, and took a lively and amused interest in its progress while he lived. When he did not survive to his sixtieth birthday, it was decided to carry on with the volume at a slower pace and make it the finest possible tribute to his memory. The twenty-three essays cover the range of English fiction from Congreve's early Incognita (1692) to Rayner Heppenstall's The Connecting Door and The Woodshed (1962). The coverage is necessarily .selective, and not every English writer of fiction is represented, but authoritative essays may be found here on Congreve, Defoe, Swift, Fielding, Johnson, Scott, Surtees, Dickens, George Eliot, Hardy, Moore, Conrad, Lawrence, Joyce, Waugh, and Heppenstall, as well as . theoretical discussions of such topics. as "authorial presence" in the novel and the novel's modes of characterization. At the rear of the book is a list of the published writings of John Butt Size: Octavo (standard book size). 486 pages. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. in archive acetate film protection; some browing to spine. Dust Jacket un-clipped. Previous owner's signature in ink is of Kenneth J. Meynell, Alice, Alice Meynell (Essays of Today and Yesterday)
Meynell, Alice
Alice Meynell (Essays of Today and Yesterday)
George G. Harrap, London, 1926. First Edition, Softcover. Fair Condition. black paper covers with blue & black titles in red border to paper label front; introductory note & contents to front. Mrs. Meynell held very insistently the belief that in the practice of literature and the arts women and men must work on an equality, be tried by the same tests, and ask no indulgence, the one from the other, on the score of sex. None the less, a woman must be an expert when writing of women; and, seeing that some rule of selection must apply to the arrangement of a volume such as this, the choice has fallen on such essays as relate to women who have created literature or been by literature created. Her own words have been in the compiler's mind: " The genus of Humanity is obviously larger than the species, Womanhood; but the species has its own value, keen and intense." Some of the essays, reclaimed from the periodicals to which they were contributed are here first published in book-form, often with the advantage of final amendments made by the author's own hand. One or two others appeared in volumes now out of print; and three are included in the volume of collected Essays. When passages from different articles on the same theme have been brought together the sequence has necessarily been the compiler's, but not without the assurance that it would have been also the author's own. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. 76 pages. Slight foxing to page edges. no Dust Jacket as published.. covers with flaps are present but detached at spine; mark to rear cover. Quantity Available: 1. Priestley, J. B., Talking: Being One of a Series of Essays Entitled These Diversions
Priestley, J. B.
Talking: Being One of a Series of Essays Entitled These Diversions
Jarrold & Sons Ltd. London, 1926. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/Poor. colour frontis. portrait drawing of Priestley. As an essayist Priestley wrote for the 'middle brow' audience. His topics and themes are numerous. Of all the Yorkshire-born writers to have graced the twentieth century, none seems to embody the supposed characteristics of this county more than John Boynton Priestley. Born in Bradford in 1894, he seems now to exist in public memory as a grumpy, pipe-smoking purveyor of common-sense but his talents were many and this curmudgeonly persona seems to be something of a myth which he himself delighted in propagating. “I have a sagging face, a weighty underlip, a saurian eye and a rumbling voice,” he explained. “Money could not buy a better grumbling outfit.” Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. 86 pages.
